Why is buying bottled water Bad News?
Bad news for your pocket
Bottled water costs you as much as petrol – you can simply turn on the tap.

90% of the cost is associated with the bottle, lid and label.
Bad news for the environment
Bottled water is a product we do not need. It is wasting resources and exacerbating climate change.
It generates 600 times more CO2 than tap water.
Of 13bn plastic bottles sold in the UK last year, just 3bn were
recycled. That’s 10bn Bottles in landfill.
70% of plastic bottles end up in landfill taking up to 1,000 years to degrade
Help prevent the drying out of groundwater resources, ocean litter and global warming – you can turn on the tap
Bad news for you
Bottled water is simply a marketing scam – don’t be conned.
Bob Geldof said: "Bottled water is bollocks. It is the great irony of the 21st century that the most basic things in the supermarket, such as water and bread, are among the most expensive. Getting water from the other side of the world and transporting it to sell here is ridiculous. It is all to do with lifestyle."
Approximately 25% of all ‘bottled water’ is tap water anyway.
Why are H2 Onya bottles made from Stainless Steel?
For the health of you and your water, it is best to avoid plastic and aluminum they are associated with a host of diseases and illness.
H 2 Onya bottles are made from food-grade 304 stainless steel the material of choice for the food and beverage industries. They don't need to be lined and will never retain or leach flavours. No matter how many times you refill them, no matter what you put into them, the drinks in your H2 Onya will always stay fresh and delicious.
What is Bisphonel A (BPA)?
Food safe Plastics by nature are soft materials (recycling codes #1 PET, #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE and #5 PP) Therefore to make a durable drinking bottle Polycarbonate (#7 PC) is used as it is considered virtually shatterproof. What makes PC so strong is a plasticiser commonly called BPA which also makes it easy to mould. An environmental oestrogen, also known as an endocrine disrupter is of growing world wide concern. Studies have linked low-dose BPA exposure with such effects as: permanent changes to genital tract; increase prostate weight; decline in testosterone; breast cells predisposed to cancer; prostate cells more sensitive to hormones and cancer; and hyperactivity.
Do H2 Onya bottles contain any lead and toxins?
No.
One of the principle purposes of the bottles – to provide a healthier alternative to plastic and aluminium.
Coloured bottles are made with lead free and toxin free paints.
Will H2 Onya bottles keep drinks cold?
Stainless steel bottles keep drinks at a really nice drinking temperature. They are single walled so don’t by themselves keep your drinks cool in the hotter months. Simply get yourself a jacket and fill your bottle with ice cubes. (See our accessories page for jackets).
Can I put my H2Onya bottle in the freezer?
No.
We don’t recommend you freeze liquid in ANY type of bottle. The force of liquids expanding as they freeze is enough to break mountains apart. So food safe materials like Stainless Steel and Glass will also become deformed or fracture. Although a lot of plastic bottles can cope with the expansion of frozen liquid, this process will fatigue the plastic so will potentially leach more harmful chemicals into you.
H2 Onya bottles have a wide mouth so you can simply put ice cubes inside. Pop a jacket on you bottle too and you have a cool drink all day.
How do I clean my H2 Onya bottle?
The wide mouth on your bottle makes cleaning really easy.
For daily cleaning, we simply recommend hand washing with a mild detergent. For thorough cleaning we also recommend an old fashioned cleaner – diluted vinegar and baking soda.
The paint in your coloured bottle is completely lead and toxin free. This paint is durable, but to prolong a long life, we do not recommend putting them in the dishwasher. High temperatures and strong dishwasher detergents can, eventually, cause the paint to chip and flake over time.
Brushed stainless steel finish is best for ultimate durability, they are fine in the dishwasher.
Sports lids are also suitable for the dishwasher.
Can I sterilise the infant bottle for milk?
Yes.
You can use a liquid sterilising solution, or simply pour boiling water into you bottle and let stand for a few moments.
Does an H2 Onya bottle have a liner?
No.
H2 Onya bottles are made from high quality stainless steel 304 (food-grade). Completely free of harmful substances and BPA.
It is aluminium that requires a liner because it should not have direct contact with food or beverages.
Where are Onya products made?
Unfortunately manufacturing our products in the UK would mean they would be too expensive for consumers.
So to make products to a high standard that are still affordable, the whole range of Onya products are responsibly manufactured in China.
Onya Bags are now made from recycled bottles. When we recycle our plastic bottles in the UK, they are made into bales and have to be sent to China for processing and can then be made into new products once more.
It would be great to be able to manufacture products in the UK, but we simply wouldn’t be able to make products that people could afford enough to change their behaviours. (Especially if we are competing with cheap, disposable and polluting items).
On the flipside, there are well over 250 businesses/people selling Onya products around the UK which does amount to a fair amount of direct and indirect employment. Nothing we could ever come close to producing a small quantity of expensive items locally.
Do I have a rust mark on my bottle?
No.
Stainless Steel 304 is highly resistant to rust.
It is incredibly rare, but sometimes during the electro-polishing process a heat mark can be made. To the naked eye, it might look like rust, but is simply a heat mark on the stainless steel.
It is completely harmless. Because it is so rare, if your bottle does have one, you can think of it as having a unique birthmark..
